PASSIONATE AND ROMANTIC....
THAT IS CHAYANNE

“Love is everything to me. It moves everything around us. It’s as if it was our own motor and also a feeling we express in different ways”. This is how Chayanne starts this interview. “There are different kinds of love. The love of a son for his mother, or for life...and the passionate love one feels towards the women of our choice.”

This super-star started his professional career at the early age of ten as a member of the group “Los Chicos”. Seven years later he cut his first solo album and today, after having earned 19 platinum records and 28 gold, he is emerging as a TV and movie actor.

Because we celebrate “St. Valentine’s Day” this month, it was a natural choice to pick Chayanne for our cover, and discover his private world and the man behind the public image.

Tall, handsome, witty, he lacks the arrogance of many stars. He speaks openly and can be very intimate in many of his answers and we discover a very different Chayanne for the one we had imagined. Romantic but realistic...talkative but enigmatic... unaffected but not unnecessarily modest.

His fine sense of humor makes us laugh many times and his seriousness, when he speaks about his family, are impressive. Friendly, he does not put on airs for having
reached fame and success.

Are you in love?
“I am always in love. In love with a song....a sunset...”

And with a woman?
"I can tell you one thing. I keep my love life my own. I have a fantastic relationship with a very special girl. It is not easy to be an entertainer. We don’t have a home, being on the road most of the time. It is very hard when you don’t see each other for months and your only contact is by phone. But if you find someone capable of accepting this situation, who understands and accepts separation without fights and jealousy, you feel you are very lucky and carefully protect this part of your life."

But ....who is she?
“A beautiful girl born on the planet Earth. I promise you and your readers, once we get engaged formally, I will tell...”

Then you expect to marry soon?
“Not soon, but I plan to get married eventually.”

And he goes on to tell us he expects to be a good husband who will also be a good lover, a friend to his wife and also hopes to be a good father to his children, giving them a correct education.

“I am close to my family....my mother....my father....my siblings. Anytime I have some free-time I try to spend it with them. No matter what, you can always count on your family to help you, love you, be there for you. At least in my case, and I feel this has prepared me well for when I marry.”

About friendship he tells us, “I give it all the value of the title only you have the right to name. For example, my siblings, I love them dearly, but it is something expected, that life itself demands. However, they also are my friends, and that title was given my to them as my choice. A true friend will give his life. if necessary.”

Are you a jealous lover?
“Yes. When you love something completely, you are jealous of what is rightfully yours, as you protect it, do not want to lose it.”

Which qualities do you find very important in a woman?
“I like a woman who is independent, who does not use you as a cane....She must have personality. She must be very feminine and with a good sense of humor.” And adds smiling, “I like her to be a woman.....to flirt. I do not want to see her with rollers on when I get home...be alluring, so I desire her that much more.”

And which is the worst fault she could have?
“To put makeup while driving.”

I ask him about his name.
“Chayanne comes from a TV series that was very popular when my parents lived in New York.”

Is that the reason why you wear boots and jeans so much?
“Oh... you have noticed. I like it, and I have my boots made especially for me from a company that offers the very best leather. They are so comfortable you forget you are wearing them.”

It time for the first part of the shooting. Our beauty expert is having trouble with his rebellious hair. “Yes, I am also a rebel...just like my hair, that has the characteristic of a wild horse, that I say this in a positive way. It helps me to work in something I like...no...love. It is something I have done all my life and makes me very happy”.

He assures us he is very passionate in everything he does. He is not especially religious, but follows the rules of the Catholic Church. “People don’t know I got my first chance when I was five, by playing percussion for the Church.”

Recently you were in Playgirl. However, you did not pose nude. Are you against this?
“No. It simply is not my style. I do not want to say as the Spanish saying goes “I shall not drink from this water” as I may find myself drowning in a sea, but I want to set the record straight. To get ahead is not necessarily to do things you are against. This does not mean that amid shadows, in a romantic scene and done with the most exquisite taste, without vulgarity, nude scenes could not work.”

How is Chayanne intimately?
“I am a man who likes music, sports, the beach and the sand. I like walking in the sand because its as if the sea is answering my doubts. Chayanne has goals, things he wants to do.... but overall is grateful for all Life has given him. And the most beautiful thing in my life is my family. They gave me a solid base, so later on I could travel all over the world and still be the person I am today.”

Does this mean that if Life starts again, you would not change anything in your life?
“Exactly, I would still like to be born in Rio Piedras (Puerto Rico), live my first years in San Lorenzo, have the family I have and be who I am; someone who does no harm, tries to help all. For example, I have a favorite organization “Starlight Foundation” whose mandate is to grant the wishes of terminally ill children, and I bring them a little joy in their lives. When you are happy you have to give back some of what Life has bestowed on you. Life has smiled on me, and so I must bring some happiness to those less fortunate.”

Tell me about your new album “Volver a Nacer”.
“It’s about all that is new in my life. It is also the title of one of the songs. But in some way, we all are reborn every day of our lives. It’s also about the changes in my office, my company. People that were with me for many years, no longer are. Life is a constant learning process and that is why I say I am born again everyday and learn something new every day. I like the challenges...and live every moment to the fullest!”

One last question. How do you feel, as an idol to millions of women of all ages around the world, on this 14th of February they will be dreaming with you.
“I do something I fully enjoy, and so I express these feelings in my show. My blood boils inside me when I step into the stage, and my heart also feels for them. When I see the public, hear the applause, a young girl asks for an autograph, a kiss, I feel motivated. How beautiful they feel such warmth for me! Today you have given me the opportunity to thank them for their love and support. I hope I never let them down, that I will continue to work very hard and continue to give all. I send them a kiss...and wish them a very Happy Valentine!”
